Is Drake’s ‘Nice for What’ the Feminist Money Moves Anthem?

The weather is getting warmer and I need a song to play on repeat while making money moves. Drake’s new song “Nice for What” is a celebration of women, but can it be named the feminist money moves anthem of the summer?

“I’ve been peepin’ what you bringin’ to the table / Workin’ hard, girl, everything paid for / First, last phone bill, car note, cable.” -Drake,“Nice for What”

I stand for women’s empowerment and gender equality. I also enjoy a great beat and catchy lyrics. It gets complicated when the empowerment tune is rapped by someone multi-faceted – the self-proclaimed nice guy who sometimes has over-sexualized lyrics about women. That complexity is not unique to Drake. It is apparent in the music of a lot of men across all genres.

Sexual images of women are left out of this visuals for this song. Drake shows female celebrities making boss moves in their respective lanes. It is moving and refreshing.

I hate the idea of a man telling a woman she does not need to be nice, but I love the line, “You gotta be nice for what?” It resonates with speaking out on structural gender inequalities and going after what you deserve without regard for a man’s reaction.

I have mixed feelings. The Drake stan in me wants this to be the feminist money moves anthem of the summer. The feminist in me says to proceed with caution and keep in mind that Drake is a marketing genius. He is providing an uplifting track at a time when gender equality is at the forefront of mainstream discussion.

As I watch the video for “Nice for What” for the hundredth time, I realize that it is acceptable to enjoy the song and have a healthy dose of skepticism for a male created feminist track. Is it the feminist money moves anthem? No, but it will be added to the money moves playlist and played on repeat.
